The major benefits that CHP offers to utilities include cost-effectiveness, quick deployment, avoidance of significant transmission and distribution (T&D) losses, and reduced strain on T&D systems. While U.S. manufacturing facilities have made progress at becoming more energy efficient over the past several decades, there are opportunities to accelerate and expand this improvement through a variety of methods including investments in more efficient equipment and the expanded use of combined heat and power (CHP). These investments can improve the competitiveness of U.S. manufacturing, lower energy costs, reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, and create jobs. However, many industrial companies face shortages of capital and other barriers to making these investments.</p> <p> To address these challenges, the U.S. Department of Energy, in coordination with the State and Local Energy Efficiency Action Network (SEE Action) Industrial Energy Efficiency and CHP Working Group, is hosting a Western Regional Dialogue Meeting on Tuesday, October 29, 2013, in Salt Lake City, Utah. This standard applies to large boilers in a wide range of facilities and institutions. DOE will offer <a href="http://www1.eere.energy.gov/manufacturing/distributedenergy/boilermact.html">technical assistance</a>  to ensure that major sources burning coal or oil have information on cost-effective clean energy strategies for compliance, such as natural gas combined heat and power (CHP), and to promote cleaner, more efficient boilers to cut harmful pollution and reduce operational costs. This technical assistance effort is in accordance with the August 2012 <a href="http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2012/08/30/executive-order-accelerating-investment-industrial-energy-efficiency">Executive Order</a>  on accelerating investment in industrial energy efficiency, including CHP. "We had to find a way to decrease our electricity costs without impacting the comfort and services for our hotel guests," says James Evanoff, general manager of Clarion Hotel Phoenix.</p> <p> The project received an $80,000 <a href="http://www.swgasliving.com/rebates/arizona/combined-heat-and-power-program-business-0">energy efficiency rebate from Southwest Gas</a>.
