The major benefits that CHP offers to utilities include cost-effectiveness, quick deployment, avoidance of significant transmission and distribution (T&D) losses, and reduced strain on T&D systems. Policy and regulatory changes that would allow or encourage utilities to take advantage of these benefits include:

Establishing an energy efficiency resource standard (EERS) or other portfolio standard that prioritizes CHP as a critical resource;

Allowing utilities to earn cost recovery and economic returns on investments in CHP, as allowed for other generation resources;

Encouraging utilities to offer dedicated CHP programs within overall energy efficiency programming, and offering performance incentives for exceptional efficiency results;

Valuing the ancillary benefits CHP can provide within cost-benefit analyses used for energy efficiency programs and resource planning efforts.

Download the full report here.

ACEEE also produced two shorter white papers based on this report, “How Natural Gas Utilities Can Find Value in CHP,” and “How Electric Utilities Can Find Value in CHP.”
http://southwestchptap.org/news-article?NewsID=54Tue, 06 Aug 2013 20:00:45 GMTWestern Industrial Efficiency & CHP Regional Dialogue Meeting: Oct 29 in SLC
Western Industrial Efficiency & CHP Regional Dialogue Meeting: Oct 29 in SLC
Tuesday, August 6, 2013

The industrial sector accounts for more than 30% of all energy consumed in the United States, and for many manufacturers, energy costs affect overall competitiveness. While U.S. manufacturing facilities have made progress at becoming more energy efficient over the past several decades, there are opportunities to accelerate and expand this improvement through a variety of methods including investments in more efficient equipment and the expanded use of combined heat and power (CHP). These investments can improve the competitiveness of U.S. manufacturing, lower energy costs, reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, and create jobs. However, many industrial companies face shortages of capital and other barriers to making these investments.

To address these challenges, the U.S. Department of Energy, in coordination with the State and Local Energy Efficiency Action Network (SEE Action) Industrial Energy Efficiency and CHP Working Group, is hosting a Western Regional Dialogue Meeting on Tuesday, October 29, 2013, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Building on the August 30, 2012, Executive Order: Accelerating Investment in Industrial Energy Efficiency, this meeting will bring together key stakeholders to obtain input on best practices, innovative solutions, and state policies that help remove the barriers to more investments in industrial energy efficiency and CHP.

This event also includes an optional tour of the CHP system at the University of Utah, located approximately two miles from the meeting location.

Who Should Attend

The Department of Energy is inviting all key stakeholders to provide input on these topics, including:

State utility commissioners and staff

State energy and economic development agencies

Utility energy efficiency program managers

Industrial energy managers

State and regional energy efficiency alliances and industrial energy user groups

Industrial trade associations

Free Registration

To view the agenda and to register for this meeting, please visit www.yesevents.com/we_iee_chp
http://southwestchptap.org/news-article?NewsID=53Tue, 06 Aug 2013 19:31:55 GMTDOE Boiler MACT Technical Assistance
DOE Boiler MACT Technical Assistance
Friday, December 21, 2012

On December 20, 2012, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency finalized the Clean Air Act pollution standards, National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants for Major Sources: Industrial, Commercial, and Institutional Boilers and Process Heaters (known as ICI Boiler MACT). This standard applies to large boilers in a wide range of facilities and institutions. DOE will offer technical assistance to ensure that major sources burning coal or oil have information on cost-effective clean energy strategies for compliance, such as natural gas combined heat and power (CHP), and to promote cleaner, more efficient boilers to cut harmful pollution and reduce operational costs. This technical assistance effort is in accordance with the August 2012 Executive Order on accelerating investment in industrial energy efficiency, including CHP. The Midwest Clean Energy Application Center is offering this supplemental Technical Assistance for affected facilities in the Intermountain region. Contact John Cuttica at the Midwest Clean Energy Application Center for more information.
http://southwestchptap.org/news-article?NewsID=51Fri, 21 Dec 2012 17:56:30 GMTNew CHP System at Clarion Hotel in Phoenix
New CHP System at Clarion Hotel in Phoenix
Tuesday, December 11, 2012

The Clarion Hotel in Phoenix has finished installation of a new 100-kilowatt CHP system that will reduce the hotel's energy bills-particularly during peak times-and pay for itself in less than 2.5 years.

The CHP system, built and financed by Phoenix-based project developer Easy Energy, will generate electricity for the guestrooms and recycle the waste heat for the pool, spa, and guestroom water needs. "We had to find a way to decrease our electricity costs without impacting the comfort and services for our hotel guests," says James Evanoff, general manager of Clarion Hotel Phoenix.

The project received an $80,000 energy efficiency rebate from Southwest Gas. Southwest Gas still has rebate funds available for additional CHP projects.
http://southwestchptap.org/news-article?NewsID=50Tue, 11 Dec 2012 17:42:20 GMT
